Don’t use the excuse, “I will start next year”, monitor your food and alcohol intake now and don’t put on those extra kilos over the holiday period.

It is a crazy time of year for the majority of people. The amount of Christmas parties and catch-ups we are expected to attend keeps us very busy. The key to avoiding packing on the kilos during this time is to eat and drink in moderation. Yes, you can still enjoy great food with your family and friends but don’t go overboard eating every delightful bit of food that passes in front of you, instead make a bee line for the healthier options.

There needs to be some compromise during this period. Acknowledge that you have overindulged and get back on track with a portion-controlled day of healthy eating the next day. Combat the extra calories with exercise, go for a run, a walk, bike ride or do an in-home body weight session.

And lastly, try and avoid drinking too much alcohol. A standard glass of red or white wine (150ml) could contain up to 120 calories. If you consume two glasses of wine, it is equivalent to eating a large Mars Bar. A small bottle of beer can contain around 150 calories. Drinking two beers is equivalent to the calories in a cheeseburger. If you are drinking alcohol over the festive season have low calorie mixers (e.g soda water) and drink light or mid strength beer. Alternate your alcoholic beverages with water. Remember that water won’t make you any less drunk or protect your liver, it will help with the hangover though!
