How to keep your New Years resolutions alive

It is that time of year when everyone has put their good intentions to the test and set their 2017 goals. We are into mid January now and some of these good intentions will start to waver. As a personal trainer, I see many faces I haven’t seen before running laps of the park, but they start to drop off by the end of January and slip back into their old lifestyles. The pressures of work and life take over and goals are put on the back burner.
Let’s look at some ways you can keep your New Years resolutions alive.

Break your goals down so they are specific and measureable
It is all very well to make a resolution to lose 10 kilos but this can get very disappointing if you haven’t lost 10 kilos by the end of January. A better goal would be to lose half a kilo a week, this will keep you motivated and is more realistic.

Tell someone about your goals
The more people who know about your goals the more you are going to be kept accountable. Also, having support from friends will keep you motivated to achieve your goals.

Keep going
You will be tested and no doubt will have a slip up. Don’t let this get you down, just pick yourself up and get back on track. Each time you do this, the closer you will get to your goals.

Create a time line and reward yourself when you reach each milestone
Your triumphs should be celebrated. Find a way to reward yourself that will not interfere with you reaching your goals.
